Installation
Current Futures is a futuristic installation in which the survival, preservation, and transmission of culture are central. Much of the original culture and stories from the Moluccas were erased by the colonial regime. Think, for example, of the banning of cultural symbols like tattoos or the genocide on Banda. At the same time, history has also decided which cultural elements and stories do survive. Moluccan culture has been partially destroyed, traded, and shipped, and has therefore also been recast into the modern Moluccan-Dutch culture. How we engage with our culture now determines what our future culture will look like. In Current Futures, Loupatty seeks to expose the static and colonial way in which museums display “cultural” objects. By adding connections and layers, Loupatty attempts to create new connections within history. All objects in the installation can be seen as a form of protection. They represent the surviving stories.
